Anita May Blanchett

This masterful artist is dedicated to her work and harnesses heart and soul into her paintings. Working intuitively to create her masterpieces, the creative process is sacred to her and the works resonate with this truth, inspiring a sense of wonder and awe.

It was an epiphany in Florence that reawakened a childhood dream to become an artist. Originally self-taught, Anita began her oil painting journey in 1997. Poignant times of transformation have directly informed her art. Born hearing impaired, adjusting to her first hearing aids in her 40’s was the catalyst to explore photo-realism. She says, “realism became a way of being present with what was directly in front of me. The focus on detail provided clarity and stillness whilst in the chaos of processing so many sounds for the first time.”
In 2004 she was invited to train with renowned New Zealand landscape painter, the late Tim Wilson during which she mastered the uniquely innovative techniques and skills that she continues to develop in her work today. Tim established the internationally renowned Wilson Gallery in Queenstown in 2010 where Anita also exhibited her works until 2023.

The application of numerous fine layers of transparent glazes in oil makes Anita’s photorealistic paintings come to life with a depth of color and luminosity that makes them appear three-dimensional. These incredibly detailed works take great skill, patience and sometimes years, to complete. The overall effect is a mesmerizing otherworldly realism and speaks of this artist’s appreciation of beauty, light and shadow, stillness and reflection.

‘Painting is my way of revering creation itself. The way light both informs and transforms everything, including myself in the creative process, makes painting a mystical practice for me. Everything about the process inspires me and I am grateful for the fact that the more I paint the more I see, learn and evolve as a person and an artist. It brings me just as much immense joy seeing others moved by the work in their own unique way as I was when compelled to paint it in the first instance.”

Anita’s work is in private collections throughout NZ, Australia, UK, China, India and the USA. Her work has appeared on TVNZ Seven Sharp and in the book ‘Spirit, Creative NZ Women’.
